How to moisturise my legs
and make them look their best at summertime

Emmanuelle FoucaudDermo-beautician

With the first rays of sun we feel a desire to change everything in our vanity case. But after such a long time wrapped from head to toe, a little spring-cleaning is in order! We talk to Emmanuelle Foucaud, skin and beauty consultant at the Vichy Institute, on preconceived ideas that need to be put aside and new solutions to try.

Should I stop using rich formulae when the weather is good?

"That's not a good idea. While it is true that we need a richer texture during colder periods of the year, this is no reason to stop nourishing your skin when temperatures rise." You don't stop eating during the summer do you? So remember, even if the weather is warmer, your skin still needs hydration. You can keep using your usual cream or you can change to a lighter texture but make sure that it is a good moisturiser.

I want to wear a skirt but I don't dare…

It's true that when the good weather arrives, it can be difficult to uncover arms and legs that have been hidden away under pullovers and tights all winter. The right option is to "use a dry oil to instantly smooth and enhance your skin. Dry oil leaves no oily film on the skin and you can get dressed straight away. But be careful, not all oils have moisturising properties and so will not necessarily provide comfort all day long." Otherwise, you may feel a sensation of tightness

I dream of a multi-purpose product, how should I choose?

A combination of practicality and sensuality of scent and texture, dry oil has it all. And to check if a formula has the right moisturising properties, there is a simple test you can do to test its efficacy. "Place a number of sheets of paper one on top of the other and place a drop of oil on top. The oil that goes through the most sheets of paper is the right one for your body! Another major asset to consider is a silicone-free oil: its active ingredients penetrate hair, skin and even nails more easily." Some oils promise up to 24 hours of lasting comfort. The end result is farewell to straw-like hair and dry legs!

Ensuring your skin is well-nourished also means looking after your diet!

Olive and rapeseed oil are known to provide nutrients needed by the skin, such as omega 6. However, squash seed oil is also rich in omega 6, hemp oil and camelina oil are rich in omega 3, and safflower oil is pumped full of vitamin E. All these oils are full of nutritious, hydrating properties which help combat dry skin. Available in specialised stores, these oils can be used in salad dressings.
